No Virus Thanks Bad I.P Detector

A great one stop solution (if you know the I.P. address) to see if a website is infected is from NovirusThanks.org. It’s called the Bad I.P. Detector and submit’s the I.P. address to 13 seperate online URL databases and link scanners to see if an URL is infected. Remember though that a website may share it’s I.P. with other websites if it is using shared and not dedicated hosting.

If you are a website owner then this site could be good place to check if other sites sharing your I.P. are giving your web site a bad name.

Global / American Book Search Engines

• AbeBooks Book Search – Lists over 110 million books, they also have the AbeBooks Rare Books Search area to “search for antiquarian & rare books.”
• Bookfinder.com – Claims to index 150 million books and can search for new, used, rare or out of print books. A massive resource.
• Addall.com – Indexes over “40+ sites, 20,000 sellers, millions of books!”
• UsedBookSearch – “linked to thousands of online booksellers via a small number of booklisting services”

UK Specific Book Searches

These UK sites allow you to search for books by title, author or ISBN. They will check at all the big names such as Amazon, WH-Smith etc. All can scour the web for the cheapest prices and are ones I personally use.

• Bookkoob – Easy to use with a lot of user reviews.
• Find-book – Good categories and bestseller sections.
• BookBrain – Has a nice interface with ordering of results in many different ways.

Book Swapping Websites

The following sites are geared towards swapping books. You offer titles to swap or exchange with other members and can search for titles yourself. Each site works slightly differently but are worth investigating.

• Bookins.com
• PaperbackSwap.com
• Bookmooch.com

Other Ways To Find Books

• Worldcat.org allows you to “Find items in libraries near you.”

Luckily Terence Chang has done the hard work and provided a JavaScript bookmarklet (a useful bookmark that processes a page in some way) that can check for you.

You simply drag the bookmarklet to your Firefox toolbar, go to the page you want to check then click your new bookmarklet. There is also an Internet Explorer version to use.

My list is entitled Top 10 Essential Addons by Jonnysblog.com (as the pic shows). I have tried to stick to only the most essential addons. I’ve stayed clear of addons specifically for one or two websites except for customize google (what do you mean you don’t use google?).

Here is what’s on my list (in no particular order).

• Customize Google Removes ads and makes google behave the way you like.
• DownThemAll! A download manager that is easy and fast.
• BetterPrivacy Removes LSO cookies (flash cookies) that aren’t cleared by firefox.
• Adblock Plus Blocks adverts – the best extension ever.
• Smart Bookmarks Bar Customizes the bookmarks bar so you can fit more on.
• Speed Dial Gives you a customizable start page with your 9 favourite sites.
• NoSquint Make the text bigger on any webpage.
• Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-Out (TACO) Stop the cookies of the major advertising networks.
• WOT Web Of Trust – A website rating tool. Helps prevent you going to malicious websites.
• Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks) For synchronising your bookmarks between computers.

CutePdf Writer

Cutepdf Writer is a rather clever application. It installs itself as a printer that can print from any application. To convert a webpage into pdf you install this program and then within your browser print the webpage. When cutepdf is installed you will have a new selection among your printers – cutepdf writer funnily enough. This sends the page to the application which converts it and presents you with a save dialog. I can’t think of a better way of handling the html conversion to pdf on your computer and the resulting pdf files look good.

PDFDownload by Nitro

An alternate for Firefox only is the PDFDownload add on by nitro. This handles pdf’s within your browser in many ways. You can specify how you wish pdf’s to be viewed, in your browser or external app. The ability to convert pdf’s is handled by the website www.pdfdownload.org. This means that you select save webpage as pdf in the file menu and the page is read from pdfdownload’s server and then sent you to download or via email. This works well but there may be a couple of downsides… the servers may be down (or you are not currentley connected to the web) or you may wish to print from a website you are logged into which obviously won’t work. This may be the choice for you if you don’t mind adding it as a Firefox extension and aren’t bothered by it’s slight limitations.

HTM2PDF Bookmarklet

A bookmarklet is a bookmark that provides a function. It is more than an url but is stored in the same way in your browser as a bookmark. The website HTM2PDF.co.uk provides you with a box to enter a webpage url in. It converts the webpage into pdf and displays a screenshot with a download link. This in itself is a nice website to know about. The handy bookmarklet on the site makes it even better as whilst surfing a site you wish to be converted you can simply click the bookmarklet and your converted webpage screenshot and download link are produced. This will of course work in any browser as it operates the same as a bookmark. Handy Dandy.

Firstly it wont host any torrents with viruses, “clean” torrents are all you see here. Secondly you get a preview of whatever is in the torrent, not just the text files attached to them. This means that you get screenshots of films, making it difficult to download something you didn’t expect.
