Windows 7 and Vista haven’t got the option to clean up old icons on the desktop – the old XP cleanup wizard. This used to be accessed by right clicking on the desktop and selecting run desktop cleanup wizard.
This is a small replacement tool that does this task for you, either cleaning permanently, or to a folder of your choice.
It finds files that haven’t been used in the last thirty days, which for me were exactly none :) I do run a clean house though.
Clean Desktop from thewindowsclub.com is freeware for 32 and 64 bit windows vista and 7
Incidentally winvistaclub (the old version of thewindowsclub) has a few nice vista and 7 tools on it’s homepage.

I like having lots of stuff on my desktop, mainly because I am lazy and unorganised. Stardock now do a proggy called Fences which is free for home users. It organises your desktop icons into “fences” well worth a look. I use it myself now! The site is http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/

I use fences myself and the installer appears to have got much better these days after previously installing a little bloatware. Thanks for the tip.

I don’t really use icons on my desktop. The superbar acts as a handy dock. And I use FARR for launching apps.
But, I wonder what made MS drop a useful feature like Desktop Cleanup in Vista and 7.

I’m terrible at keeping my desktop clean. Utterly rubbish. I use fences to try and get some organisation going but it still ends in a disorganised mess. Is this the Farr you mean?

If so it looks really good and I’m gonna have to try it.. looks like a cross between the app everything and windows search functionality in start menu?
