This list aims to show you the *BEST* freeware video tools for various video related tasks. These tools are all free and should be all you need to complete most video related tasks.
Ripping a Protected DVD
DVDShrink – Can Rip many DVD9 (dual layer) DVD’s onto your hard drive into DVD5 (single layer) size, ready for burning. It can rip the whole disc including menu’s and extras or just the main movie.
DVD43 – Removes the decryption from DVD’s whilst sitting in your application tray so you are able to Rip them with other software. “ DVD43 will decrypt (unlock) a movie DVD so that your copy program can read it.”
Converting a Video File
Mediacoder – An open source video / audio converter that can handle lots of video types and convert them to another… Including H.264, XviD, DivX, MPEG 1/2/4, Theora, Flash Video, Dirac, 3ivx, RealVideo, Windows Media Video, AVI, MPEG/VOB, Matroska, MP4, PMP, RealMedia, ASF, Quicktime and OGM.
Handbrake – Can take Video_Ts folders, Unencrypted DVD’s and most video multimedia files and convert them into other formats. It has a lot of Presets for Iphone / Ipods / PSP / XBox and is fairly simple to navigate through.
Building Your Own DVD
DVD Flick can take nearly any video files you have and build a playable dvd with menu’s and subtitles from them. It has an easy to use interface yet is very powerful. It will create a disc image and burn it for you or save it to your hard drive.
Backing Up Your Files to Span Multiple DVD’s
This is a subject I have covered before with freeware – How to split directories to span DVD’s.
Burning Your DVD
ImgBurn can burn a lot of image formats including BIN, CUE, DI, DVD, GI, IMG, ISO, MDS, NRG and PDI. As well as this it can build a Dvd from Video_Ts folders or read a disc and rip it onto your hard drive (providing it is unencrypted). It can do a lot more on top of this including burning cd’s and verifying burns. It may look slightly complicated but once you get the hang of it’s modes and read some of the guides it’s easy peasy.
Hope these have helped…do you prefer a different tool or collection of tools? I’d love to hear in the comments.
