Outssider is a freeware tool that is to be used with your laptop when you are “walking outside in the need for WiFi.” This is not a situation I’ve found myself in but for people who live in cities or more built up areas then this could be handy.
Essentially it can find open WiFi hotspots that are not encrypted or require passwords so that you can surf for free. Whilst this program is scanning it asks you to walk (as shown in the screenshot), stop and wait if it finds a possible connection and then shows success or failure.
Rather novel is the way it guides you by sound also. Various sounds relate the various states until you get a success – ding ding ding ding! This is to allow you to save laptop battery life by having your laptop screen switched off.
In essence this is a very simple tool that seemed to work very well for me. It is based on the metageek tool Inssider which is useful for troubleshooting Wi-Fi access and viewing WiFi signal strengths.
