Game Booster is a freeware application designed to squeeze a few extra fps (frames per second) out of your latest resource hungry game by stopping unnecessary services and processes. As I wrote earlier in Jonnysblog about extending the battery life of a laptop and recommended culling hungry processes and services when roaming, I thought I’d look at Game Boosters ability to help.
The services it stops and processes it stops are not critical to activities such as playing a game (obviously) or surfing the tinterweb. It will not however stop things like your firewall or antivirus program from running which is good if you are connected to the internet (although it may stop the antivirus or firewalls frontend from showing possibly – the services are not stopped). Additionally once you have finished playing Horrendous Murder Driver Sniper 12 or are plugged back in to your charger you can revert all temporary changes.
It must be stressed that this program only temporarily stops services and processes and then re runs them when you are ready. If you wish to stop unnecessary services from loading at start-up or find out which services you need running then Vista Services Optimizer is the key. Black Viper has a great guide to vista services in which he explains a little about each service and which ones you can disable.
If I’m going to doing anything mobile (without my charger) with my laptop I usually boot it plugged in and then leave it in sleep. Also wireless networking is turned off until I get to my local cafe (usually within ten minutes of starting sleep). My laptop always usually reports about an hour forty minutes to go but after using Game Booster I had a healthier looking 2 hours 10 minutes. This is hardly science fact but I think it is helping me squeeze a few more minutes out of my laptop. Another coffee please :)
Used Game Booster? Let me know in the comments…
