Facebook Privacy – Who are you showing your life to?

Facebook PrivacyI have been looking into Facebook privacy after a friend revealed that they didn’t know that status updates were shown to their facebook friends – well duh?? There have been a lot of stories about people landing themselves in hot water after contacting old flames or not turning up for work and telling the world they pulled a sickie. Facebook can land you in a whole world of trouble as these airline workers found out.

Here is someone who definitely deserves the sacking that came his way. He updated his profile with a racist joke about new president Obama and was axed by his employer.

Another issue with Facebook is that it can reveal lots of info like date of birth, mothers maiden name, pets name and the like that are used to identity yourself online. This info could be used to impersonate you – to steal money from an online account etc.

A great article on facebook security with walkthroughs of the settings you should look at concerning privacy has been produced by Sophos.

Leaving your Facebook profile at it’s default settings can cause lots of privacy issues and www.allfacebook.com have also written a great guide detailing the potential pitfalls – and how to avoid them.
