Vista Services Optimizer has just been updated (and no longer crashes on my setup) so I have given it the review treatment.
As you can see from the options above it is possible to automatically or manually tune-up your services on your computer. Services are programs that start up but don’t require any user interaction such as the windows firewall or the time updating service.
Some of these services are unnecessary depending on the setup of your computer. For example if you don’t have a printer / camera / tablet then there are services you can disable. Disabling these services means less processes running in the background and a faster PC. Microsoft’s information on services has never been too great and so Tweakhound provided a great guide.
Using the automatic option asks you a couple of questions then sets you up with a trimmed set of services and a faster pc – hopefully. The manual option allows you to specify which services you’d like to stop from starting automatically (which is what I mean by remove) by giving you a list of tick boxes – and providing info on each option.
It is possible in vista to type services in the search bar and click on the services tool that appears on the list to edit your services but it doesn’t provide the information this tool does, or the automation.
Another handy feature is the restore function – this can restore anything the program has changed or even restore all the services to their default conditions. It might be wise however to set a system restore point before running this program – just in case.
Overall this a great tool that anyone with a slightly slow computer or a geeky nature should download.
