Lusting for extra broadband speed and wondering whether to pay for an upgrade to your Broadband package? This gadget and quick fix may make you think again.
Bt has introduced a product to wholesale (not the mass market yet) that will increase your broadband connection permanently for under a tenner. Dubbed the I-plate, the device sits between your current master socket and it’s faceplate.
The idea behind this device appears to be to limit the interference on a cable known as the Bell Wire. An excellent description of the Iplate can be found on: http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/btiplate.html
Another even cheaper way of achieving the same effect is to isolate the bell wire itself.
Again an excellent walkthrough and explanation of this simple process is given here: http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/broadbandspeed.html
Barry Collins at PCPro saw his broadband speed increase by 60% and tells us about his experience here: http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2008/09/10/iplate-boosts-broadband-connections-by-60/
According to Barry Collins at PCPro:
“We’ve seen huge increases in speed,” claimed Ashley Pickering from BT Wholesale’s broadband access solutions team. On average, it makes one and a half megs of difference.”
Pickering says he expects the device to be launched within the next few months, with a retail price of around £10. The device can be fitted without the services of an engineer, simply by unscrewing a plate in the master socket and slotting the iPlate in. BT says it expects ISPs to distribute the device freely to customers with connection problems, saving on the expense of support calls and engineer visits.
Could be worth a look rather than shelling out those extra pennies, especially in the current financial climate.
